How to Troubleshoot Your 510-thread Cannabis Cartridge

510-Thread Technology

510-thread cartridges and batteries are some of the most popular and longest-selling vaping devices ever. Convenient and universally compatible, 510-thread carts will fit almost any 510-thread battery. First introduced by Joyetech in 2010 for nicotine e-cigarettes. 510-thread refers to the threading of the male end of the connection having 10 metal threads at an interval of 0.5 mm, hence, 510-thread. The 510-thread format has gone on to become ubiquitous with cannabis vaping. The format continues to be one of the most popular ways for cannabis companies to sell their products. Different cartridge types connect to compatible batteries. 510-thread devices give end users more flexibility in their vaping journey, allowing for a mix-n-match approach to batteries, carts, and flavors.

Troubleshooting Common 510 Cart Issues

Even the highest quality, most reliable devices can sometimes encounter glitches that can disrupt your vaping experience. Luckily, most of these problems have simple solutions. This blog explores some of the most common issues with 510 vape cartridges, including clogging, dry hits, and carts not hitting. We'll walk you through each issue and provide practical troubleshooting tips to help you get back to enjoying your device smoothly and efficiently.

Why Cart Problems Can Occur

Problems with 510 vape cartridges can arise for various reasons, but understanding these issues makes it easier to prevent and troubleshoot them. Common causes include improper filling or capping, incorrect storage, or using incompatible oil types. Thankfully, many of these problems are both preventable and fixable. By taking the proper steps—such as using only compatible oils, carefully filling cartridges, and storing vapes properly—businesses and end users can ensure reliable performance and extend the lifespan of their 510 cartridges.

510 Cart Issues

Because of the very design of 510-thread carts, issues can occur in either section of the devices. So, it's best to recognize where the problem is happening and then troubleshoot from there. The following are issues that occur in the 510-thread cannabis carts themselves.

No Vapor Produced / Cart Not Hitting

Occasionally, even with a fully charged battery, you may encounter a situation where when you try to take a hit of a 510 cartridge, but no vapor is produced. You press the button and draw in as usual, but nothing happens. You check that the cartridge still contains oil and that the battery is charged and working. So what's the problem?

Possible causes

Solution

Poor battery connection

    • Carefully clean both the cartridge and battery connectors with a Q-Tip and Isopropyl alcohol (99%).
    • Unscrew the cart from the battery a little at a time. Then retighten–but not too tight.
    • Test the cart with another battery.

Clogged airflow

    • Use the preheat function if available (featured on Bilo and S3 Digi batteries).
    • Unscrew the cart and suck on it as if it were a straw. Then reattach and try again.
    • Warm it in your hands. Wrap your hands around the cart and then try taking a dry hit and seeing if it will pull.
    • Hold upright and blow in the bottom.
    • Heat with a hair dryer on low setting for 30 seconds or less.

Low / empty cartridge

    • Check that the oil level is at least one-third full.
    • Replace cartridge with a full one.

Low / dead battery

    • Test cart with an alternate battery.
    • Recharge the battery for at least 30 min.
    • Replace the battery.

Defective cartridge / Damaged coil

    • If nothing else works, the cartridge may be faulty and need to be replaced.

Dry Hit / Burnt Taste

No one likes surprises, especially a bad one. Has this ever happened to you? You take a hit from a 510 cartridge, expecting a smooth, flavorful cannabis experience, but instead, you're met with an unpleasant surprise—a harsh, burnt-tasting vapor. Often called a dry hit, this smoky, nasty, burnt taste can be off-putting, to say the least. It can even cause a coughing fit or burning sensation in your throat. One of the hopes of any cannabis vape enthusiast is never to have this experience again.

Possible causes

Solution

Voltage is too high

    • Use a lower setting for your oil.
    • Use a battery with temperature control options like the S3 Digi and Bilo.
    • Start at a lower voltage and slowly raise the voltage to your desired power.

Low oil

    • Check the oil level of the cartridge.
    • When a cart is down to 5% to 10% left, dispose of the cart and replace the cartridge with a full one.

Clogged cart

    • Use preheat function if available (featured on Bilo and S3 Digi batteries)
    • Unscrew the cart and suck on it as if it were a straw. Then reattach and try again.
    • Warm it in your hands. Wrap your hands around the cart, and then try taking a hit.
    • Hold upright and blow in the bottom.
    • Heat with a hair dryer for no more than 30 seconds.

Overhitting

    • Wait longer between hits.
    • Let the vape cool for at least 30 seconds after each hit.

Improper storage

    • Store carts upright.
    • Store cartridges separately from the battery.
    • Disconnect the cart from the battery when not in use.
    • Keep silicone covers on both the mouthpiece and battery contact.
    • Keep 510-thread cartridges out of direct sunlight.

Fake cart

    • Only buy carts from reputable, trustworthy sellers.
    • Use the OMNI App to confirm the authenticity of your cart.

Leaking Cartridge

Leaking cartridges have been an issue throughout the history of the cannabis vape industry. Even the best carts with the purest oils can leak if filled or stored improperly. Identifying the specific cause of a leak can be tricky as there can be many different reasons for a leaky cart. However, businesses and end-users can use several preventative steps to limit the chances of cartridges leaking.

Note: Most leaking cartridge issues are caused by improper filling or capping during production. These problems typically require solutions that end users cannot implement and are best addressed by businesses during the filling and capping process.

Possible causes

Solution

Improper storage

    • Store carts upright.
    • Store cartridges separately from the battery.
    • Disconnect the cart from the battery when not in use.
    • Keep silicone covers on both the mouthpiece and battery contact.
    • Keep them out of direct sunlight.

Improperly filled cart

    • Buy carts from trustworthy companies.
    • When filling carts, follow the instructions and only use a syringe or automatic filling machine.
    • Fill and cap carts in the proper time frame.
    • Screw-on carts must be sealed properly.
    • Press and seal carts must be sealed with the appropriate capping device.

Overfilled cart

    • Buy carts only from a trustworthy company.
    • Follow filling instructions carefully.
    • When filling, make sure carts are not over-filled.

Over-tightening

    • Don't over-tighten when filling and capping cartridges.

Incompatible oil

    • Verify oil compatibility with the cart.
    • Follow the filling instructions carefully.

Oil Bubbles Forming in the Tank

Occasionally, tiny bubbles can form inside the oil tank of 510-thread cartridges. These bubbles can lead to inconsistent vapor production, a greater chance of clogging, and dry hits. Bubbles can affect the user's vaping experience and strain the cartridge, potentially shortening its lifespan or wasting oil.

Possible causes

Solution

Improper filling

    • Avoid overfilling.
    • Follow the filling instructions.

Temperature fluctuations

    • Keep carts at a stable temperature.
    • Avoid extreme temperature changes.

Improper storage

    • Store 510 carts in an upright position.

Incompatible oil

    • Verify oil compatibility with the cart.
    • Follow the filling instructions carefully.

Shaking

    • Don't shake a 510-thread cart.

Overhitting

    • Take slower, shorter draws.
    • Take a pause between hits.
    • Let the vape cool for at least 30 seconds after each hit.

Voltage is too high

    • Use a lower setting for your oil.
    • Use a battery with temperature control options like the S3 Digi and Bilo.
    • Start at a lower voltage and slowly raise the voltage to your desired power.

Cartridge Oil Running Out Too Quickly

Do you find that a 510-thread cart is running out of oil too quickly? Have you ever had a cart run out of oil faster than other carts you've used? Several factors could lead to a 510-thread cartridge running out of oil faster than you think it should.

Possible causes

Solution

Leaking cart

    • Inspect the cart for leaks; if you find one, dispose of it and replace it.

Voltage is too high

    • Use a lower setting for your oil.
    • Use a battery with temperature control options like the S3 Digi and Bilo.
    • Use a battery with a preheat mode to optimize oil usage.

Defective cartridge / Damaged coil

    • If nothing else works, the cartridge may be faulty and in need of replacement.
